Weather

Straddling the equator, the Maldives is one of those countries where the idea of seasons becomes meaningless. Temperatures vary little throughout the year ranging between 78 degrees and 87 degrees. On average there are more than 2500 hours of sunshine annually. Luckily there are often pleasant breezes off the ocean.

The annual rainfall is approximately 2000mm (78in) and, being typically tropical it can rain at any time. You are unlikely to spend two weeks in the Maldives without seeing any rain and this is why you can usually find an umbrella in your accommodation.

There are two monsoon periods, a southwest monsoon from May To November called the hulhangu and a northeast one, the iruvai, from December to April the latter being the drier months and also the peak season for tourism.
